J.A. Cöster was active in Hanau near Frankfurt in Hess in the 1850s. The barrel has a recessed and crowned muzzle with dual gold bands, dovetailed front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, scrollwork and "J.A. CÖSTER IN HANAU." in gold inlay on the breech section, dual gold bands at the breech, and "CS" stamped on the bottom. A peep sight with large disk is fitted to the upper tang. The lock and furniture have intricate and dense Germanic scrollwork accented by gold and silver inlays. The spurred trigger guard has what appears to be "DJSs" in gold. It is equipped with adjustable double set triggers. The figured walnut stock has a smooth forend, checkered wrist with border carving, large sweeping cheek rest, and a Swiss style buttplate with acorn upper point/screw.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 95% plus original brown finish, bright gold inlay, 60% of the original fiery case colors, aged patina on the silver, some minor spotting, mostly light edge wear, more wear on the fence of the bolster, and general light scratches and marks. The stock is very fine and has repairs above the lock and on the right side of the butt, attractive figure, some minor scrapes in the otherwise crisp checkering, and a few scattered dings. Mechanically excellent.
