Description:

Francois LePage was active in Liege, Belgium, around 1770-1813. He was succeeded by his sons, Charles and Alphonse, who did business as LePage Freres (LePage Brothers) and manufactured guns in Liege and had an office in Paris around 1857 to 1868. Like their well-known Parisian counterparts, the LePage Brothers were certainly producing some very fine arms. This technically interesting and artistic shotgun was manufactured around the mid to late 19th century and has a rotating lever under the bottom that pushes the barrels forward and allows them to be tipped for breech loading but remains a percussion gun rather than a pinfire. Rotating the lever the other direction secures the barrels closed. They partially envelop the breech creating a tight seal. The barrels have distinct chambers indicating they were loaded with ready made cartridges, likely combustible cartridges. It also has a bead front sight, "LEPAGE A LIEGE & A PARIS" in gold inlay with an ornate gold border on the rib, Liege proofs on the bottom of the Damascus barrels, gold bands and border designs at the breech, and elaborate scrollwork and gold inlaid game scenes with golden borders on the locks and furniture as well as a "disgorging green man" mask with golden eyes and on the trigger guard tail, smooth forearm, and nicely figured buttstock with checkered wrist, finely shaped large cheek rest, and heel and toe plates.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with bright original gold inlay, distinct markings and engraving, smooth finish and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrels, minor oxidation replaced hammer spurs, some patches of darker patina, mostly smooth gray on the balance, and generally only mild wear. The wood is also very fine and has glossy varnished finish, scatted minor dings, attractive contrasting figure in the butt, and crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. This is an exceptional example of the high quality work crafted by LePage!
