Description:

This is a fine example of a desirable WWII Nazi M30 Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle manufactured by the J. P. Sauer and Sohn company. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater and was intended to provide a high quality survival weapon in the event of a forced landing. These are a three-barreled combination gun consisting of two 12 gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3X74R rifled barrel. These pre-war drilling always exhibit the beautiful, high quality workmanship that J. P. Sauer and Sohn was noted for. They have a high polish rust blued metal finish on the barrel, sling swivels and barrel release lever with a beautiful color casehardened finish on the receiver, trigger guard and forend latching mechanism. They were always fitted with select high quality European walnut that exhibits a hand checkered pistol grip and forearm area with a hand rubbed oil finish. The quality of the fit and finish on these weapons rivals anything that was produced in the U.S. at that time. The underside/face of the rear barrel lug has a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark, along with the standard "Eagle/N" Commercial firing proofmark on each barrel. As noted the rifle barrel is also stamped with a ultra-rare very small "Eagle/M" Navy proofmark indicating issuance/acceptance to the German Kriegsmarine. The underside of each barrel is marked with the appropriate bore and gauge/caliber markings "12/65" and is stamped "242" for the month and year of manufacture. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number, "338118", is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the very end of the trigger guard tang. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle Swastika" mark. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. This drilling has a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail is marked with the matching serial number "338394" with the intertwined "SS" proof for Sauer & Sohn along with the commercial "Eagle N" firing proof on the right side. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL", and a larger intertwined "SS" logo is on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece, a casehardened pistol grip cap, and a black plastic serrated buttplate with the intertwined Sauer & Sohn "SS" logo in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with the large prominent "Luftwaffe Eagle/swastika" insignia. The partial serial number "8118" is stamped on top of the metal attaching iron inside of the forearm. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch and is marked directly behind that with a small "W./St." When engaged, the rifle barrel selector raises a folding 100 meter rear sight on the rib and engages the forward trigger. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. This drilling has a diminutive high quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard, and engraved screw heads, and the forearm and pistol grip are finely checkered. The drilling is stored in an aluminum carrying case that has the dark gray/black painted exterior, with a black stenciled contents listing inside lid. The case has a very small Luftwaffe/Krieghoff "Eagle/2" acceptance proof on the front of the case directly above the carrying handle. This is one of a few "Luftwaffe" proofed aluminum cases that this describer has even seen. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling. The rifle also includes an original drilling leather sling, one section of the wooden cleaning rod, a brass jag, a bore brush and one bore mop. It also includes a WWII issue copy of the Luftwaffe M30 Drilling field/operators manual dated June 1941.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 90% of the original blue finish on the barrels with some slight oxidation on the side of the shotgun barrel. The receiver, trigger guard and grip cap all show 30% of their case colors overall. The buttstock and forend are both in very fine condition showing only minor to light handling marks on the sides of the stock. The checkering is very fine plus condition with nice distinct checkering overall and only a couple handling marks. The Luftwaffe Eagle on the side is very deep and prominent. Mechanically excellent.
