Description:

This is a fine example of a very scarce WWI trench shotgun manufactured by the Remington/UMC company under a U.S. Army contract. These were only produced for a very short time with most being reconverted back into riot or sporting shotguns over time. Original examples are found in the serial number range of 117731-165566 and are considered the apex of a U.S. martial shotgun collection. These have the factory blued finish, and walnut slide handle, buttstock and handguard mounted on top of the barrel. The front underside of the receiver is stamped with the Remington factory serial number of "U/164853". The top of the barrel is correctly marked (under the handguard) "10A-REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO./REMINGTON WORKS, ILLION NEW YORK USA/PATENTED FEBRUARY 3, 1903, AND MAY 16, 1905." The barrel is also correctly roll marked with the Remington, circled "REP" factory proof along with the matching serial number "164853" stamped upside down on the lower right side. The barrel is fitted with a matte blued bayonet lug with the correct "Eagle Head" proof on the front end. The left side of the receiver is stamped with an U.S. Ordnance "Shell and Flame" proof over "U S". It has an oil finished ribbed pump handle and buttstock with a sling swivel attached to the front end of the magazine tube and the lower underside of the stock. The buttstock has a smooth pistol grip shape and a hard rubber, checkered buttplate that is impressed with the Remington/UMC logo. The length of pull is 13 3/4 inches. It comes with a WWI leather sling marked: "W.T.& B CO./1918/J.O.Y."

Rating Definition:

Very fine as converted/restored to original configuration with 80% plus of its original blued finish remaining overall, edge and high spot wear, and more finish loss on the magazine tube and pump handle slide from where the action was cycled. The wood components are all in fine condition with the pump handle and buttstock having been lightly cleaned but not sanded and reoiled and the wooden handguard/heat shield being a very close copy/replacement of an original one. At some point it was a riot shotgun that was converted into a Trench Gun configuration as it retains a 23 inch barrel with a plugged front sight bead hole in the barrel and still has US property markings. A very nice looking and nearly impossible Trenchgun to locate that would fill a vacancy in any advanced martial arms trench shotgun collection.
