Description:

This is an exceptionally rare example of a Springfield Armory Second Type .22 Cal Gallery practice pistol complete with its original first pattern .22 LR magazine. This design was actually developed in early 1914 by J.H. Carl of Gilroy California and submitted to Springfield Armory in May 1914. This example is "1 of 25" pistols actually produced and was formally in the "Nickleson" Collection. This design and its history is discussed and pictured on pages 442-453 in the reference book "The US Military Automatic Pistol 1894-1920" by Meadows. This model predates the Colt floating chamber conversion kit and is an improvement on the first type developed by Springfield Armory. It uses a standard Springfield Armory M1911 frame and internal components with a completely redesigned upper slide, breech block, firing pin assembly and magazine. The actual test model frames were manufactured circa 1914 however they were eventually placed in storage by Springfield Armory due to the war manufacturing efforts during WWI. The program was subsequently revived in early 1919, proceeded to have several test pistols assembled but was again stopped in 1923 with no additional work being performed beyond that time. The right side of the slide is marked with the traditional Springfield eagle and shield motif with no other markings. The left side of the frame is stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" with the Ordnance Corps shell and flame insignia above the magazine release button. The serial number "73338" is located on the right side of the frame behind the slide stop hole. The frame still retrains all the standard WWI era type internal parts such as the early 1914 pattern checkered thumb safety, checkered slide stop release, smooth main spring housing, short horned grip safety and wide spur hammer with the border-less checkering. It is fitted with a set of standard checkered walnut grips with the large diamonds around the screw holes. As noted, this pistol is complete with its original and extremely rare first pattern/type magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% of a beautiful, professionally restored blue finish overall with only a hint of edge wear on the metal surfaces. The breech bolt is still in the white. The markings are clear and sharp. The walnut grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides. An exceptionally rare Second Type Springfield Armory Gallery Practice .22 LR pistol.
