Description:

Colt only manufactured approximately 15,500 of these revolvers in 1847 to 1850, but the Model 1849 Pocket that replaced them was essentially an updated version and proved to be Colt's most popular percussion revolver. All of the smaller percussion Colts typically show heavy wear from being carried but this 1848 manufactured revolver remains in very fine condition and has age rather than wear. It features a small cone front sight, "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY" double stamped on the barrel (once reading from the muzzle and once reading from the breech), the running Indian battle scene on the cylinder which has a single safety pin, small "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame, and matching serial numbers. It comes in a mahogany presentation case with brass fittings, an ornate key hole escutcheon, and fitted interior holding the revolver, a cap tin, small double sided eagle powder flask with angled spout, and Colt dual cavity brass bullet mold without a sprue cutter. Provenance: formerly in the Norm Flayderman Collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. 90% plus of the original silver plating remains and has taken on an attractive natural aged patina. 60% original blue finish remains, strongest on the barrel; and the frame and hammer have 40% of the subdued original case colors. The excellent grip has 95% plus original high gloss finish, light dings and scratches from handling and storage, and tiny chips at the toe. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are fine with mild tears on the lining, natural aged patina on the brass, and general light scratches and marks. This is certainly one of the finest Baby Dragoon revolvers we have offered in quite some time!
