Description:

This is one of a several hundred revolvers purchased for the New South Wales Police in southeastern Australia. It has "No 352" over London proofs on the left side of the barrel and "N. S. W. POLICE" on the right. These match the markings on other known N.S.W. Police revolvers. Also like other known N.S.W. revolvers, a small "E" is marked by some of the serial numbers. New South Wales in the mid-19th century was home to its own gold rush and outlaws, much like the American Old West. The other surviving example generally show signs of heavy use. The Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences in New South Wales has one in their collection and notes: "In 1861, the New South Wales Government placed an order with Colt's London agency for the supply of five hundred Navy model pistols. Another order was placed for Colt Navy pistols in 1868. As some Colt arms used by the Government predate 1861, they may have been procured as one-of orders, or purchased by other means." This revolver's serial number dates to 1862. It also has a post/bead front sight, "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" on the top of the barrel, London proofs on the cylinder, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, and all matching serial numbers.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refinished with nearly all of the nickel plating on the loading lever and grip straps, significant silver plating on the cylinder, smooth gray patina on the frame, and 70% plus blue finish on the barrel. The cylinder markings and serial number on the butt are partially obscured, and there are minor scratches and marks throughout and some light pitting. The grip is very fine and has some minor dents and scratches, glossy varnish, and minor edge wear. Mechanically excellent.
