Description:

This rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1886 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 40/82, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inches" and "Trigger: Plain". The Cody letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on July 8, 1905. The rifle has a full octagon barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight. The rear sight has knurled edges, screw-adjustable center-piece and elevator marked on the left side with 1901 patent dates. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The 1884/1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped in script numerals between the rear tang screws. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, and bolt have a high polish blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened with subdued case colors. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a semi-gloss varnish finish. Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifles with barrels longer than the standard 26-inch barrel are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains 97% plus of the blue, bright original high polish blue and casehardened finish. The octagon barrel and full length magazine have nearly all of the blue finish. The barrel markings are perfect. The bright blue finish on the forearm cap shows some very minor handling wear and has about 95% of the finish. The bolt retains nearly all of the bright blue finish. The loading gate has 98% of the fire-blue finish with minimal wear. The receiver shows almost no wear and has 97% of the bright blue finish; the only indication of handling is some slight dulling to the blue finish on the lower tang around the serial number. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 98% of the muted case colors and show almost no wear. The crescent buttplate retains at least 97% of the color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are both in excellent overall condition and retain nearly 95% of the varnish finish with scattered minor handling marks primarily on the upper stock wrist. This is an excellent example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with scarce 28-inch octagon barrel.
