Description:

Manufactured in 1897 according to George Madis' serial number range. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a half octagon barrel in .30 caliber, extra lightweight takedown configuration, plain trigger, half magazine, "sling and swivel" (absent) and cleaning rod when received in the warehouse on August 29, 1900 and shipped on September 3. The rifle is equipped with a raised dovetail Lyman beaded blade front sight, a three leaf rear sight and a folding tang peep sight. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address and caliber designation on the top flat and the two-line nickel steel marking on the upper left flat. Other features include sling eyelets, straight grip stock and a trapdoor crescent buttplate. A four piece cleaning rod is included. The underside of the stock has a silver oval inscribed "Geo. Snowden/Andrews/1901." Based on research provided by the consignor, George Snowden Andrews (1868-?) was the son of Richard Snowden Andrews (1830-1903). Richard served as a lieutenant colonel of artillery in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, fought in several battles, was nearly killed at the Battle of Cedar Mountain when a Union shell nearly disemboweled him, and was wounded again on the way to Gettysburg. Richard's father was Union Brevet Brigadier General Timothy P. Andrews.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 50% thinned original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. There is some minor pitting. 20% of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is very good with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A desirable Model 1894 extra lightweight takedown rifle with the added bonus of being historically inscribed.
