Description:

Manufactured in 1878 as a First Model with integral dust cover guides and dust cover with checkered thumb-print grip. King blade front and elevation adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sights, standard Winchester markings, and smooth straight grip stock fitted with a crescent trapdoor buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The included copy of the Cody Firearms Records Office serial number research request lists it as a carbine (obviously not with 30 inch octagonal barrel; factory error) along with the 30 inch barrel and set trigger. It also lists receipt at the warehouse 29 April 1878, shipment 6 May 1878, return from New York store and shipped again 9 July 1878, and finally returned to the factory and shipped with the 30 inch octagon barrel and set trigger on 3 December 1889.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains strong traces of original blue finish with the balance a grey-brown patina and a few scattered patches of light pitting. Vise marks visible on left barrel flat. The reoiled wood is good with scattered minor dings and scratches scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent.
