Manufactured in 1918 and subsequently converted to a short carbine. The barrel has a blade front sight, "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO/NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 7. 1879." and ".44 W.C.F." (more recently added) on the left side of the barrel, a "circle P" proof on base of barrel under the forend, a Lyman no. 41 peep sight, the "WP" proof on the receiver ring off-set to the left, an added saddle ring and stud on the left side of the thin-side frame, the three-line trademark marking on the upper tang, a Schnabel tip forearm with contrasting insert, and musket buttstock with a steel buttplate.

Fine as assembled with 40% faded blue finish on the short barrel, 75% plus blue on the frame, dark case colors on the breechblock, smooth brown patina on the balance, and mild marks and scratches. The reshaped forearm and the buttstock are fine and have smooth oiled finish, general minor pressure marks and scratches, some small flakes and hints of slight hairline cracks at the upper tang, and a filled sling swivel slot on the bottom of the butt. Mechanically excellent.
