Description:

The accompanying factory lists this Model 1881 with a 32 inch barrel in .40-60 caliber, pistol grip stock and set trigger when shipped on March 13, 1886 with unknown recipient. Although not all of the special order features are confirmed by the factory letter, these features are most certainly factory. As noted Marlin expert William Brophy explained, "Unfortunately, the few remaining factory records do not, with any regularity, indicate if the gun was factory engraved or not." The accompanying letter from collector Rick Regnier addressed to the consignor states the rifle had been in the family since 1978 (purchased at a Denver, Colorado gun show) until sold to the consignor and lists the rare factory special order features as the following: One of 1,303 Model 1881s with a pistol grip stock listed in the factory records, "B" style checkering, one of 42 Model 1881s listed with a 32 inch octagon barrel, one of 2,929 Model 1881s listed with double set triggers, extra heavy barrel, factory engraving, and one of only two known Model 1881s with a factory rosewood stock (the other known example, serial number 9326, is pictured on page 248 of Sam Maxwell's "Lever Action Magazine Rifles"). The break down of special order features and production qualities are also found in Maxwell's "Lever Action Magazine Rifles" on page 237. The receiver features engraved floral scrollwork and circular panel game scenes depicting a buck on the left side and a grizzly bear on the right side. The scrollwork extends to the bolt. The rifle is fitted with a combination Beach front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates ending in "RE-ISSUE NOV. 9, 1880" ahead of the rear sight and "40 CAL" at the breech. The buttstock is fitted with a steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The professionally restored barrel and magazine tube retain 85% blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer, receiver and lever, otherwise a smooth gray patina. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches, some worn forearm checkering and overall crisp pistol grip checkering. Mechanically excellent. This one of two known rosewood stocked and factory engraved Model 1881 Marlin is a must have for the serious collector who wants to secure bragging rights for the most advanced Marlin or lever action collection! A true rarity among Marlin high art firearms!
