Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1858 under contract with the U.S. government. Most of these revolvers saw hard use on the frontier with the dragoons and mounted rifles and were subsequently used by both sides during the Civil War. The revolver has the round brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops found on Third Model Dragoons. The frame and steel back strap are cut for use with a shoulder stock (not included), and the frame is also the "four-screw" version (actually five) with extra screws that engage the stock. It has a hole for fitting a lanyard on the butt. The top flat of the barrel is marked "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY-" and has a rounded German silver blade front sight and a dovetailed two-leaf rear sight. The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." The trigger guard is marked "2" and "M" on the left. Matching serial numbers are found on the loading lever, wedge, cylinder, barrel, frame, trigger guard, and butt. Comes with a very high quality lucite custom case, which really shows off the gun well.

Rating Definition:

Good with a silver-gray patina throughout the steel along with mild pitting, distinct markings other than the cylinder scene which is gone, aged patina on the brass, and some scratches and dings. The "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." frame marking is restamped. It mechanically needs work as the cylinder does not turn as the gun is cocked. The undersize grip is fair and has some chips at the toe and heel.
