Description:

Only 3,400 of the revolvers are estimated to have been manufactured by Rogers & Spencer in the early 1860s. 2,000 were for an U.S. Ordnance Department contract. This example has an unmarked hexagonal barrel with a brass post front sight and "WW" stamp at the breech instead of a standard octagon barrel, "777" and "B" marked loading lever, "C.S. PETTENGILLS/PATENT 1856" and "RAYMOND & ROBITAILLE/PATENTED 1858" on either side of the rear sight groove, "P" on the butt and inside of the side plate, and smooth grips. Why the revolver has a "P" on the butt and no serial number on the butt or grips is unclear. It also appears to have had a full blue finish instead of a casehardened frame. Prototype Pettengill revolvers are known to have been manufactured with some variations in finish and barrel types.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has 50% of the bright original blue finish, visible patterns, and rough edges. The cylinder has 30% of the blue finish, and the frame has patches of blue finish. The loading lever has some subtle case colors. The action needs some work; the cylinder currently back spins upon firing and rotates a little tight. The revarnished grips are good with moderate scratches, dings, and edge wear. The markings are mostly crisp.
