Description:

Coehorn mortars were invented by Dutch military engineer Menno van Coehoorn at the beginning of the 18th century and remained little changed by the time of the Civil War. They were small and thus readily man-portable using as few as two men and could be used from within trenches during siege operations. This mortar was manufactured by Ames and has "166 No. 220 1865 A.M.Co." on the muzzle. The bore measures approximately 5.82 inches at the muzzle and is approximately 13 inches deep including the chamber. The weight is noted as 166 lbs., and the Paulson Bros. Ordnance reproduction bed would add roughly another 130 lbs. 59 Coehorn mortars are noted as purchased from Ames on April 10, 1865, under a contract from January 13, 1865. This order likely included this mortar as the other closest purchases were in the latter part of 1864 (50 others) (see page 244 of "The Ames Sword Company 1829-1935" by Hamilton).

Rating Definition:

Very fine with attractive natural aged patina on the bronze, some scrapes and wear from use and age, and mild storage wear on the bed.
