Description:

The barrels have a brass post front sight, Birmingham proofs, "FINE DAMASCUS TWIST" on top of the rib in the breech section, dual gold bands and a floral motif at the breech, and "T.W. COFER & CO. PORTSMOUTH. VA." and scroll patterns in the mid-section highlighted by gold wash. The locks are both marked "JR COOPER" and have scroll engraving. The furniture also has scroll engraving. A silver presentation plaque engraved with a border, fleur-de-lis, crossed Confederate battle flags, and "C.R. Mc Intosh/Co. D/43rd/Va. Cav." is mounted on the bottom of the forend. Joseph Rock Cooper (1814-1882) was a gunmaker in Birmingham, England. Thomas W. Cofer (1828-1885) ran T.W. Cofer & Co. in Portsmouth, Virginia, and manufactured a small number of revolvers similar to the Whitney Navy revolvers for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Charles Richard McIntosh (1838-1922) was a Confederate private during the Civil War and fought in K Co. of the 17th Virginia Infantry from April 22, 1861 to February 18, 1863, was wounded in the left hand at 2nd Manassas (Second Bull Run), and later served with Company D of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry (the Mosby Rangers). Rating Definition:

Very good with dark brown mix of natural patina and applied brown, aged patina on the silver, light patina on the locks, oxidation concentrated on the hammers which have chips at the heads, and general mild wear. The repaired, refinished stock has a thick coat of applied brown stain from the wrist forward, traces of checkering, and mild scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine.
