Description:

Over one million of these commercially produced Pattern 1853 rifles were imported and widely used by both sides during the American Civil War. This example has an "1862" dated, "TOWER" marked lock, and the buttstock has a cartouche on the right side for Charles Reeves' Toledo Works in Birmingham. Reeves was in operation from 1854-1885 in various locations around Birmingham and a had retail shop in London in 1859-1863. The rifle shows the standard markings and features of those that would have been exported for use in the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing a mottled grey-brown patina on most of the metal surfaces with the brass showing an attractive antique patina and some scattered light pitting. The very good wood has minor dings and scratches throughout, reglued hairline crack visible ahead of the lock and on the left flat, and crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
