Description:

This rifle is relatively plain aside from its beautifully figured curly maple stock. Given its lack of embellishment and rather large caliber, it may have been built for militia use. The only marking found is "P<" on the inside of the lock plate. The heavy rifled part-octagon/part-round barrel has traditional blade and notch sights, a flat top along the round section, a beaded girdle at the transition point, and a hooked breech. The standing breech is dished and has light bead style borders. The lock has some small flourishes of scroll engraving. The trigger has attractive scroll patterns. The furniture is all brass. The trigger guard has an acorn finial, and the front lock screw washer is also acorn shaped while the rear washer is shaped somewhat like a mincing knife as is sometimes seen on New England rifles. The buttplate is mostly flat and has a stepped style finial similar to those on Brown Bess muskets. "28" is in yellow paint on the buttplate (should be relatively easy to remove).

Rating Definition:

Fine with untouched original mottled brown patina and mild oxidation on the lock and barrel, attractive aged patina on the brass, gorgeous flame figure along the full length of the maple stock, some minor hairline cracks, replaced mainspring, moderate scratches and marks, and generally mild wear. Mechanically fine.
