Description:

The Sacred White Buffalo by Henry Merwin Shrady (American: 1871-1922) is a museum quality original bronze. Shrady is known for his work on the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial in Washington D.C., a contract won in the same year that this bronze is dated. The white buffalo is the most sacred of all the animals to the plains Native American tribes. The white buffalo is not an albino buffalo. His head is slightly turned to the left and he is scratching himself on the tree trunk beside him. The white coat shows the muscular content of this sacred animal and the reverence that the Native Americans have of him. This bronze is similar to the magnificent buffalo that is located at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK. The bronze is signed and dated on the back side: HM Shrady/1902". It is also marked with the foundry that cast the bronze, "Roman Bronze Works N.Y.", a foundry Shrady was known to work with. The plinth dimensions are 23 inches long by 13 inches wide, and the bronze measures 15 1/2 inches tall. The bronze weighs in at 92 pounds.

Rating Definition:
