This attractive rolling block was manufactured c. 1868-1888 and has elaborate acanthus scroll engraving on the nickel plated forend cap, barrel bands, receiver, and buttplate, breech end of the blued barrel, and the casehardened breech block and hammer. The barrel has the "barley corn" front sight and sword bayonet lug at the muzzle and a nickel plated rear sight with three peep holes and that is graduated from 1-4 on the base and 1-10 on the ladder. The forearm has a high gloss varnished finish and relatively plain grain and figure while the buttstock has the same high gloss varnish and attractive fiddleback figure. The caliber appears to be .43 Spanish. Other ornately engraved and embellished Remington military rifles are believed to have been made for presentation to military officials, and a rifle like this would certainly be fitting of a high ranking officer.

Very fine with 95% plus original blue finish, 90% original nickel plating, strong case colors on the breech block and hammer, some spots of minor oxidation/pitting, light edge wear, and a few small scratches and marks. The wood is also very fine and has strong glossy varnish, attractive figure, light scratches and dings from handling and storage, a small flake/chip on the edge of the forearm on the left near the breech, and a few small dents. Mechanically excellent.
