Description:

Only a few hundred Long Range Creedmoor rifles were manufactured by Remington in 1873-1890. Herb Glass's listing for this gun is included as are documents about Joseph Roswell Hawley (1826-1905). Glass identified "Jos. R. Hawley" as "Joseph R. Hawley of Connecticut, prominent Civil War soldier and statesman. Hawley's long and illustrious military career began in 1861 when he assisted in the formation of Rifle Company A of the 1st Connecticut Volunteers, and for which he personally procured Sharps rifles directly from the factory. He was at Bull Run and was a regimental commander in the battles of James Island and Pocotaligo, the siege of Charleston and the capture of Fort Wagner. In 1864 his regiment was one of the few armed with the Spencer rifle, again personally procured by him. In September 1864 he was made Brigadier General and was mustered out in January 1866 as a Major General. In April 1866 he was elected Governor of Connecticut. An ardent Republican, he was elected to Congress in 1872 and to the Senate in 1881. His life long interest in guns and shooting led him to participate in long range target shooting popular at Creedmoor, Long Island and other ranges. He is reported to have been captain of the American International team at Creedmoor in 1878." The barrel also has "L.L. HEPBURN" three times on the bottom. As Glass notes, "Louis Hepburn was a specialist in Remington's target barrel department; a member of the Creedmoor team and later, mechanical superintendent at Remington. This gun undoubtedly received his personal attention." The blued part octagon barrel has a windgauge globe front sight with spirit level, "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." marked on top followed by "Jos. R. Hawley" in flush gold inlaid script, border engraving and a flourish of floral engraving at the breech, and "44 S" marked on the bottom. The casehardened frame has border engraving with scroll accents, three scrolls on the left, two scrolls on the right, floral accents, "PATENTS/MAY 3 1864/MAY 7 JUNE 11/NOV 12 DEC 24/DEC 31 1872/SEPT 9 1873" marked on top of the faceted breech, "C" scrolls and border engraving on the blued hammer and breechblock, a Vernier peep sight fitted to the upper tang, and additional scrolls on the trigger guard and tang. The forearm is smooth and has a hard rubber cap, and the buttstock has a checkered pistol grip, horn grip insert, no cheekpiece, holes for mounting the peep sight at the heel for shooting from the back position, and a smooth casehardened shotgun buttplate. "4632" is on the back of the forearm, bottom of the barrel, and lower tang and is likely also on the stock and buttplate (not dismounted out of caution). A penny ground smooth on one side and stamped "421" is attached to the trigger guard. This rifle is pictured in Marcot and Lewis' "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines & Shotguns; Sporting & Target Rifles" on page 126.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with all of the bright original gold inlay, 90% original blue finish, 85% original case colors, smooth brown patina on most of the balance, crisp markings and engraving, minor edge wear, and generally only slight handling and storage related wear. The wood is very fine and has smooth oiled finish, some scattered mild scratches and pressure marks, a group of dings on the right side of the butt, and a small amount of slight chipping/flaking at the toe. Mechanically excellent. Herb Glass (Senior) wrote, "A superb example of one of Remington's finest efforts; exciting both for its significance in the classic era of long range [i]international matches and its historic ownership."
