In operation from 1910 to 1962, William Scagel remains one of the top names in American custom knife making, producing everything from pocketknives to axes by hand, equipping Smithsonian Institution expeditions, and serving as an influence and mentor to Bo Randall of Randall Made Knives. 9 1/2 inches in overall length, with a swept-back 5 inch spear point blade with "W.SCAGEL/HANDMADE USA" on the left side of the blade and a faint "V.L. & A./CHICAGO" stamp on the right, indicating the sporting goods and outfitting establishment of Von Lengerke & Antoine, a major Midwestern dealer in firearm and knives. The hilt is of multi-piece construction, with a contoured brass oval guard, a series of red, black and gold spacers, smooth leather washers, and finally a stag pommel secured with brass rivets. Includes the original brown leather sheath, with the main pieces secured with rawhide and brass tacks, and a gilt snap on the retention strap.

Fine overall. The blade shows a mixed gray patina, with darker patches on the right side, some shallow pitting, a few brown streaks and spots, and some light sharpening. The hilt is also fine, with some mild scuffs and dings. The sheath is very good, with some stains and scuffs.
