Description:

This is a very attractive Victorian shotgun that looks like it is still ready to hit the field. The lock has scroll, border, and dog and bird scene engraving and is marked "DE BERGUE" below the bolster. The latter also has scroll engraving and game bird engraving as well as a platinum plug. The top of the barrel has "LONDON," and the bottom of the barrel has London proofs and "11." The latter is the gauge marking, but the bore measures .79 and thus is 10 gauge. The barrel has a flat top and a bead front sight. The upper tang and buttplate have scroll engraving. The forend cap and wedge plates are silver. The trigger guard has a scene with a dog and two birds. The silver wrist escutcheon is inscribed with the initials "RH." The case contains cap tins, screwdrivers, wads, a punch, mop, jag, funnel, spare nipple, and an oiler.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 60% plus brown finish and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrel, 75% case colors on the lock and breech, 60% blue finish, dark aged patina on the silver, some minor pitting concentrated around the muzzle, and general minor wear. The refinished stock is fine and has crisp checkering, attractive grain, glossy varnish, and minor scratches and dings. The steel buttplate is slightly oversize. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has mild age and storage wear such as a crack in the lid and wear on the lining. Overall an attractive set.
