This incredible pistol from c. 1880 at first glance looks like a classic muzzle loading percussion dueling pistol but in fact is a breech loading centerfire pistol. The front of the trigger guard pulls in to release the barrel which tips down for loading. It has an automatic extractor when the barrel is tipped, and the stock is hinged and fits tightly together. It can be converted to a breech loading percussion pistol. The barrel has ribs at the edges, dovetailed blade and notch sights, "PETER SCHENK & SOHN<-" in gold inlay on top, and gold inlaid bands at the breech. The standing breech and hammer also have gold line inlays, and they, the lock, and the other furniture have finely detailed floral and scroll engraving. The non-rebounding lock has "IN MARIENBAD" in gold inlay with a gold border and "M. LENHARDT" on the inside. The stock has nickel-silver wedge and wrist escutcheons and highly detailed scroll and floral carving. The case has attractive nickel-silver inlays as well as an eagle with carved pearl wings at the center and "P. Schenk & Sohn/Marienbad" in gold inside the lid. The lining is purple velvet. The rosewood veneered case is fitted to the pistol and the following accessories: horn flask with silver mounts, measure, bullet mold, nipple wrench with two screwdriver tips, tool that appears to be a starter, cleaning rod, a pair of percussion nipples, spare firing pins and springs, and ornate key.

Very fine overall with 85% plus dark plum blue finish on the barrel, some gray spotting on top, dark original case colors and gray on the lock and furniture, bright original gold inlay, crisp engraving and carving, original varnish, and generally only slight age and storage related wear. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are also very fine and similarly only have minor age and storage related wear such as some fading at contact points inside the case.
