H.W. Mortimer & Co. Georgian Volunteer Type Flintlock Musket

Barrel: 39 inch round
Finish: bright

Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1218
Item Interest: Average
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 232
Class: Antique
Description:

The lock is marked "H.W./MORTIMER/& Co." and is more refined than a martial musket, and the barrel has London private proofs and a bayonet stud/front sight. Sling swivels are on the forend and trigger guard, and the stock has brass furniture, including an oval wrist escutcheon. The lock markings indicate this gun was manufactured c. 1799-1806; however, the barrel lacks the "Gunmaker to his Majesty" markings usually found on H.W. Mortimer guns (see "The Mortimer Gunmakers, 1753-1923" by H.L. Munson for more details). It was likely manufactured for use by an English volunteer during the Napoleonic Wars in defense of the homeland against French invasions and is fairly similar to the India Pattern muskets then in use by the Royal Army and Navy.

Rating Definition:

Fine with fairly bright iron surfaces showing some light pitting and gray patina, lightly aged patina on the brass, smooth oiled finish on the fine, light sanded, reoiled stock, light scratches and marks on the metal and wood, some slight insect lines, and mild overall wear. Mechanically excellent.
