Description:

Manufactured between 1954 and 1956, this fine Highway Patrolman revolver shows a number of early Pre-28 features, including the pinned barrel, counter-sunk chambers and 5-screw frame. In addition to the standard markings, this revolver shows a fine punch dot backed scroll engraving over 70% of the surface, especially dense on the sides of the frame and between the cylinder flutes, with the left side of the frame inscribed "LAMAR TOOZE" below the cylinder and "ENGR. BY R. MAREK" just ahead of the enlarged right handed target grip. A part time lawman and engraver, Rudy Marek got his start on jewelry in the 1940s and received training from Suhl-trained independent engraver Arnold Griebel in the 1950s, and signed on with Colt as a factory engraver in the 1960s. Lamar Tooze is identified in a note provided by the consignor as Major General Lamar Tooze Senior. Born in Oregon in 1895, Tooze was a lawyer in civilian life, a veteran of both World Wars, co-author of the book "With the 364th Infantry in America, France and Belgium" (with whom he served as a young first lieutenant along with his twin brother Leslie, who did not survive the war), and post-WWII commander of the 104th Infantry Division, an Army Reserve training unit located in the Pacific Northwest.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as custom embellished, with 90% of the factory quality blue finish, showing some light handling marks and edge wear overall. The engraving on the cylinder is taking on a light contrasting brown patina, with bright cuts on the barrel and a more subdued color on the frame. Solid casehardening is present on the hammer and trigger, with bright color on the right side of the hammer. The grips are very good, with a few mild dings and attractive grain. Mechanically excellent.
