Description:

Offered here is an astonishing and exceptionally rare matching set of Colt engraved and gold inlaid factory display Officer's Model Target revolvers with presentation case. As confirmed by the included factory letter, this set was displayed at Phil B. Bekeart Co. of San Francisco, California, and Marshall Field Co. of Chicago, Illinois, between 1933 and 1939. The well traveled revolvers were displayed at Marshall Field on two separate occasions. The factory letter confirms each revolver's features: 6 inch barrel, blue finish, respective caliber, grip material and factory engraving with gold inlay when originally shipped to Murta Appleton Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 13, 1933. As stated in an included 1984 dated letter by antique arms consultant and dealer Ronald Ogan, this set was believed to be "purchased by a lady for her intended groom as a wedding present", remained in one family until the early 1980s, and comes with the "correct and original" case. Both revolvers feature matching exhibition quality, Wilbur Glahn style full coverage floral scroll engraving on a stippled background. Accents of gold inlay appear on the barrel, cylinder and frame. Wilbur Glahn was very active from 1920-1950 and was a well-known and favored engraver of Colt handguns. The quality of engraving on these revolvers is a testament to Glahn's masterful craftsmanship. Each revolver is equipped with target sights. The original grips have silver Rampant Colt medallions. The fitted leather bound case has a blank silver inscription plaque on the exterior of the lid. The revolvers are pictured and identified in R.L. Wilson's "The Colt Engraving Book, Vol. II" on pages 588 and 589. Factory engraved Officer's Model series revolvers are rarely encountered. A matching set of differing Colt model pistols is nearly impossible to find. As R.L. Wilson noted, "Matched sets made up of different model firearms are of utmost rarity in the field of decorated Colt firearms."

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 99% plus original blue finish showing slight handling evidence. The engraving is crisp. The grips are also excellent with two darkened hairline age stress lines visible on the bottom, some minor handling marks and attractive color and grain. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with some replacement hinge screws, some minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the lining. As a true rarity among Colt masterpieces, this set is definitely a crown jewel in decorated firearms collecting!
