Description:

Both tunics are of green twill construction, with "U.S." and "winged propeller" badges on the collar. 1) 1st Lieutenant tunic, with silver bullion rank bars and Junior Aviator Badge over a gray and blue ribbon, two service chevrons and a left shoulder patch with a large "N" surround a red, black and white roundel. A label for Whitaker & Co of New York is present in the left inside pocket, dated 1917 and hand-signed for a Lieutenant S.E. Elliott, and a "H" monogrammed handkerchief is in the upper left breast pocket. Notes from the consignor identify Elliott as Stuart Ellis Elliott, a MIT graduate and officer with the 13th Aero Squadron, 2nd Pursuit Group, posted in France. 2) Sergeant tunic, Sergeant chevrons (with lozenge device) on the right sleeve below a white-on-black 6" (propeller) 9" patch, one service chevron on the left cuff and a patch featuring a buffalo on an American red-blue-white roundel on the left shoulder. A bison is the insignia of the 99th Aero.
