Description:

It has "PRESENTED BY CAPT AR.P.E. WILMOT, RN, CB,/TO THE TOTTENHAM, UNION, CLUB, ASSOCIATION./SEPTR, 1862" on the right plaque and "MODEL OF THE ARMSTRONG/GUN SCALE 1, INCH. 1, FOOT./MADE OF BRASS TAKEN/FROM THE DOCK GATES OF/SEBASTOPOL." on the left plaque. It has a 8 3/8 x 16 inch main base with a small replica shell. The rifled barrel is about .65 caliber and approximately 7 1/2 inches long. The siege of Sevastopol (sometimes seen spelled Sebastopol in British sources), Crimea, Russian Empire, lasted nearly a year from October 1854 through September 1855 during the Crimean War and ended in victory for the Allies. Sevastopol was key to Russia's naval power in the Black Sea. In celebration of their victory, cannons captured from Sevastopol were placed as trophies in various ports within the British Empire. Tottenham is in North London. Arthur Parry Eardley-Wilmot (1815-1886) was the son of Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, 1st Baronet and attended the Royal Naval College starting in 1828. His service included: lieutenant of Powerful (1840), lieutenant of the Wolverene (1841), flag lieutenant of the flagship Cornwallis (1843-1844), flag lieutenant of flagship Hibernia (1845-1847), commander (second in command) of flagship Hibernia (1847), acting captain of Spartan (1847), commander (second in command) of Superb (1847-1848), commander of Harlequin (1850), captain of Sphinx (1854), captain of flagship Nile (1858-1859), captain of Sans Pareil (1859-1862), commodore of Rattlesnake (1862-1866), and second in command of the Channel Squadron (1871).

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with aged patina on the attractively aged brass, mild scratches and dings throughout, a few minor chips and cracks in the wood, one of the base legs absent, and general mild wear. Overall, this is a very attractive and interesting piece that would make an especially nice addition to a British military collection. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
