Description:

Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun manufactured by the Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in 1921. Colt manufactured 15,000 Thompson Submachine Guns for Auto-Ordnance in 1921. Around 1926, the Marine Corps obtained a number of the original configuration Model 1921 Thompson Submachine Guns. Based Marine recommendations following combat use in Nicaragua, Auto-Ordnance modified many of the Model 1921 guns to reduce the rate of fire from 800 to 600 rounds per minute. The modified guns featured a heavier actuator, re-designed buffer rod and pilot spring, shorter firing pin spring and were fitted with a Cutts Compensator. The modified Thompsons were designated "U.S. Navy Model 1928". The receivers were modified by stamping "U.S. NAVY" above the original "MODEL OF 1921" marking on the left side of the receiver and over-stamping the "1" in "1921" with an "8". The Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Guns were one of the most popular Thompson variations and were purchased by many law enforcement agencies during the 1930s. This Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun is listed in "Colt Thompson Submachine Gun Serial Numbers & Histories Vol. 1" as being one of six Thompsons owned by the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida. The right side of the stock is stamped: "FSP 3339" in block letters ahead of the buttplate. This standard configuration Model 1928 Navy Thompson has a finned barrel with second pattern Cutts Compensator and oiled walnut foregrip. The Cutts diamond logo and patent markings are stamped across the top of the compensator at the muzzle. The right side of the barrel and receiver have matching alignment marks. The receiver has the standard Lyman folding leaf rear sight with bright face. The left side of the receiver is stamped "U.S. NAVY" above the roll-stamped marking: "MODEL OF 1921/NO 9527. The roll-stamped "1" is over-stamped with a hand-stamped "8". The Thompson Submachine Gun nomenclature and Colt patent marks are roll-stamped on the left rear of the receiver below the rear sight in five lines. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION./NEW YORK, U.S.A." in two lines below the rear sight followed by the "MARCH 9, 1915" - "DECEMBER 28, 1920" patent markings in six lines and the encircled "JHB" inspection stamp behind the ejection port. The receiver has the correct, bright-finished, un-marked bolt, bronze Blish lock marked "UP" with an arrow and no manufacturing markings, early style pivot pin without disassembly hole and red fiber buffer. The blued actuator is stamped "AOC" on the right side and is a WWII replacement. The trigger frame group has the Colt rocker pivot, safety lever and magazine catch. The left side of the trigger frame has the second style Colt "FIRE" and "SAFE" and "FULL/AUTO" and "SINGLE" markings. "NO 9527" is roll-stamped on the bottom of the trigger frame. The detachable stock is an original Colt 1921 stock stamped on the front face with the small anchor used by Remington, the Colt sub-contractor for Thompson stocks. The butt-trap contains the original fiber spacer. The pistol grip and forearm are original Colt components and are un-marked. The barrel, receiver, trigger frame and stock components have the Colt commercial blue finish. The forearm, pistol grip and stock are oil-finished black walnut. This Thompson is complete with a scarce and very desirable FBI style case with compartments for the stock, machine gun and magazines. The case lid has straps for a cleaning rod. The case has a black leatherette cover and leather handle with leather reinforcements on the corners and nickel-plated latches and lock. The interior has a navy blue velvet lining with black leather cleaning rod straps and interior reinforcements. The case has no maker markings. The case contains three WWII Auto-Ordnance 20-round magazines and one un-marked 20-round magazine. Also included is an early production Auto-Ordnance 50 round "L" drum magazine with New York address on the drum plate and winding instructions for 1921 and 1928 Model Thompsons on the cover plate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun retains 90% plus of the original Colt commercial blue finish and has all of the original Colt components with the exception of the WWII production actuator. Most of the finish wear is limited to the edges of the right side of the receiver with some shallow scratches on the edge of the ejection port. There is light-moderate finish wear on the trigger frame behind the pistol grip and the compensator muzzle and high points. The receiver, trigger frame and compensator markings are all sharp. The pistol grip is in excellent condition with very little handling wear. The sides of the foregrip have some minor handling marks but the grips remains in very fine condition. The stock is in very fine overall condition; the blue finish on the buttplate has worn to a smooth, silver-gray patina; most of the blue is present on the top of the stock near the release button. The right side of the stock has a number of shallow dents and handling marks; the left side shows minimal wear with crisp law enforcement marking. The FBI case is in very good overall condition. The leather on the handle and corner reinforcements has some minor flaking and the case body has several insignificant handling marks. The nickel-plated hardware has some scattered, light, surface rust. The case interior is in very good condition with the expected compression marks and some oil stains in the magazine compartment. The "L" drum is in excellent condition and all four 20-round magazines retain most of the original bright blue finish. This is an outstanding original example of a law enforcement Colt Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun in very fine condition complete with scarce and very desirable original FBI style case.
