Description:

This is an excellent example of DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine. This carbine is complete with an original factory matching numbered walnut shoulder stock and an early lined leather carrying case, made for the Luger pistol only. These carbines were an early attempt by DWM to a produce a light weight rifle substitute to compete specifically with the Mauser Broomhandle carbines. There were only a total of 2,500 of this model ever produced in two serial number blocks with this specific pistol being in the later block. These early carbines all have that distinctive look with the early features such as: the 11 3/4 inch barrel, with the factory installed hanger mounted on the front end of the frame. This holds the small walnut forend which houses a small spring loaded accelerator mechanism inside that assists the pistol to function correctly during the cycling phase by helping to return the barrel/upper receiver into battery due to the additional weight of the barrel. All these early 1902 Carbines have all the rare and desirable early features such as: the long old style frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and the recessed/flat breech bolt with the small spring extractor. The top of the chamber is blank, and the front toggle has the DWM logo. The full serial number is correctly stamped on the underside of the frame extension and the underside of the barrel. Inside the forend cutout it is also correctly stamped with number "233". The last two digits of the serial number (33) are correctly marked on the various small parts. The grips are unnumbered; however, the right side is marked with a small "*" asterisk proof on the back. The stock is completely original and has a black horn butt plate, lower sling swivel, and an original attaching iron that is numbered "233" on top. The magazine has a nickel plated body and the correct wood base and is marked with only a single small ordnance bomb type proof. These pistols all have a rust blued finish with a straw color on the various small parts. As noted above, this Luger Carbine is complete with a very rare early leather holster that has the initials "J.W.H." stamped on the front flap. The back side has a double ring hanger for a shoulder strap which is missing. This leather cases was probably made in the same time as the carbine and likely in the U.S. as it has block letters. Surviving leather holsters are seldom found today as they usually received all the wear and tear in lieu of the Luger.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% of the original blue finish overall with slight grip strap thinning with the smaller parts retaining 85% plus of their original straw colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The stock has a matching attaching iron that retains 98% of its original blued finish. The stock is in excellent condition showing only minor handling marks. The checkered walnut grips are excellent with nice distinct checkering overall showing only minor handling marks on the sides. The forend is also in excellent condition with a nice light brown color with nice distinct checkering on the sides showing light wear across the tops of the checkering, with several minor handling marks on the sides in front of the checkered panels. The sling swivel on the forend is a little loose as its missing the small nut on the inside. The holster is also in very fine condition with nice tight stitching overall showing minor scuffing on the toe area and the top rear area of the flap. A super high condition all matching DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine rig. Provenance; Formerly of the Bretherton Collection.
