Description:

The Remington Rolling Block was one of the most popular, versatile, and strongest of all rifle actions in the latter part of the 19th century. They were used with everything from small black powder rimfire cartridges up through strong smokeless powder cartridges, short range plinking to long range target shooting, hunting and military use, and around the globe. Most are very plain, but this rifle is heavily engraved and plated in gold and silver. The engraving is in keeping with the finest factory engraving from Remington. The engraving is mainly floral, scroll, and border designs and extend to nearly every component with the exceptions being the front sight and trigger. There are detailed scenes on the top of the barrel and sides of the action. The two-part scene on the right side of the action show a hunter taking a bird, and the left side of the action also has a two-part scene of a dog chasing a group of three birds. The top of the barrel has what seem to be two does. The hammer has a bestial face on the sides. The upper tang is hand engraved with "Remington Ilion NY USA/PAT MAY 3D NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866." The barrel is equipped with a Beach combination blade and globe front sight and a notch and folding ladder rear sight with adjustable peep and has "44 CTG'E S" on the bottom. The sights, hammer, breechblock, trigger, and screws are gold while the balance is silver-plated. The barrel, forearm, lower tang, stock, and buttplate have "1718." The left side of the upper and lower tang are marked "20754." The rife is pictured in Marcot and Lewis' "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines & Shotguns; Sporting & Target Rifles" on pages 112, 116, 117, 118, and 119.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. 85% plus original gold plating remains, and the silver plating remains strong under the forearm and in similar protected areas. The engraving and markings remain crisp. The stock has an old overcoat of varnish and is very good and has minimal light handling and storage marks. The stock has a repaired break in the wrist, typical of exhibition guns with such highly figured wood. Mechanically excellent. This is one of the most highly embellished and attractive of all Remington rolling block rifles and is certain to add value and interest to any American arms collection.
