One of less than an estimated 100 prototype pistols based on the Model 1900/1902 rifle action and manufactured during the early 1900s as Winchester explored the idea of making a single shot pistol based on the actions of these popular rifles. It has no markings aside from a Winchester oval proof on the bolt and is fitted with blade front and dovetail notch rear sights. There is a tag attached to the trigger guard that is signed by George Madis and is marked "No. 4". Madis discusses the these prototype pistols in "The Winchester Book". Includes a letter from George Madis describing this pistol and other similar pistols in this auction as factory prototypes. It is possible that some of these prototypes were retained by Winchester employees leading to the belief by some that they were nothing more than "lunch box" guns.

Very fine, retains 95% original blue finish with some light edge/high spot wear, handling marks, and scattered spotting. The grips are fine with some minor scratches and flaking and retain most of the varnish. Mechanically excellent.
