The barrel chambers a .44-40 W.C.F. cartridge (gauges at .42 at the muzzle and .47 at the breech) and has a Beach style combination blade and globe front sight, rear dovetail filler block, and "MADE TO ORDER BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN./NOT PROVED" marked at the breech. The barrel is marked "1" underneath the forend (either a serial number or assembly number). The frame has the usual "P S" and two-line patent marking on the left that was standard on the U.S. Army contract Model 1871 pistols. A peep sight has been fitted to the rear of the action, and the gun has been fitted with a Schnabel tip forearm with a sling stud and a pistol grip buttstock with a saddle ring on the left side, a hard rubber grip cap with checkered bottom, a sling stud on the bottom, and a slightly curved hard rubber buttplate with serrated back.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original blue and 20% original casehardened finish, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation, and general mild wear. The wood is also fine and has minor repairs at the rear of the forearm and right side of the wrist, minor hairline cracks in the butt, some nice figure in the butt, and light scratches and marks. Mechanically fine.
