Description:

Only an estimated 1,200 No. 1 pistols were manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1854 and 1855. These pistols, along with the less than 500 larger No. 2 pistols, represent an important step in the evolution of lever action firearms. This design was later manufactured in slightly altered form by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and New Haven Arms Company before being the basis of the famous Henry rifle which was ultimately refined by Winchester to become the legendary Winchester Model 1866. The barrel is stamped with the two-line S&W Norwich, CT address on the top flat, "PATENT/FEB. 14, 1854" on the left flat, and "CAST STEEL" (upside down) on the right flat. The receiver has the standard Rococo style acanthus and floral engraving patterns. The engraving extends to the back edge of the hammer. Both grip panels are numbered to the gun.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. 40% thinned original brown finish remains on the barrel and magazine. Traces of original blue finish remains on the frame in the protected areas, otherwise a brown-gray patina. There is a small hole on the magazine (see photo) and some scattered pitting. The engraving is crisp. Vibrant original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are very fine showing some minor handling marks and retaining most of the original varnish. Hammer must be manually set to the full cock position as operating the lever does not engage the hammer. A historic link in the evolution of lever action firearms that is a must have for any serious antique firearms collector. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
