Documented Master Engraved and Silver Mounted Alvin A. White Breech Loading Flintlock Pistol from the White Collection

This pistol is shown on page 295 of "Steel Canvas: The Art of American Arms" by Wilson. Two other flintlock pistols in the auction are also pictured, and all are identified as "made from scratch" by Alvin Alexander White, "the dean of American arms engravers." Inside the lock is signed "AA White." White was easily one of the most talented firearms engravers in the U.S. in the 20th century and is particularly well-known for engraving Colt revolvers both as a master engraver at Colt after World War II and as a private engraver. The pistol is expertly crafted and would fit excellently in a collection of antique arms or among modern artistic arms. It has a multi-stage, cannon style, rifled, screw-off barrel. The breech has floral and martial engraving and a "P" proof style mark. The lock has light scroll and border engraving. The trigger guard, serpentine side plate, wrist escutcheon, and pommel cap are silver and have detailed scroll, floral, and grotesque patterns, including a grotesque mask plug on the pommel. The stock has raised shell carving at the breech, nicely shaped flats, and smooth oiled finish. Provenance: The Alvin White Collection

ConditionVery fine, mixed aged patina on the barrel and breech, brown and gray patina on the lock along with some light controlled oxidation, attractive tarnishing on the silver, distinct markings and engraving, and mild overall wear. The stock is also very fine and has crisp carving, smooth finish, and minor dings and scratches that help give it that authentic 18th century feel. Mechanically fine. This is an impressive piece of craftsmanship from one of the most respected master engravers in American history: Alvin A. White.
