Description:

Flintlock fork and knife sets are known marked by Richter of Reichenberg. (See page 234 of "Firearms Curiosa" by Winans for example). This set is not signed and not identified as to origin. Though it is very likely these were made purely as oddities, it is possible they were actually meant to be used as tinder lighters. Flintlocks were certainly used for such purposes. Aaron Burr even caught himself on fire using a pistol to light a candle. Such a set would provide a traveling gentlemen with both refined flatware for dinner and the means of lighting a candle though they are rather awkward to handle due to the fact that the lock mechanisms are all external. The handles are brass and have some light engraving. The knife blade is about 6 inches not including the base, and the fork tines are 5 inches.

Rating Definition:

Good as fabricated at unknown time period with applied aged patina on the handle, silver-gray patina on the iron, mild oxidation/pitting, and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.
