Description:

This ornate double barrel shotgun was manufactured in Belgium in the 19th century and was likely meant for trade in the colonies such as the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). It has a cabinet number "MA/L/7996" at the toe of the stock. The Damascus barrels have a post front sight on the rib and etched and gilded scrolls and at the breech. The bottom of the barrels likely has Liege proofs and related markings. The locks have scroll and pheasant scene engraving. The forend cap is a bear or wolf head. The brass trigger guard has a swan scene on the bow and scroll and line engraving on the balance. There are also several German silver accents inlaid in the ebonized stock which is heavily carved with a variety of designs including a bearded face with glass eyes on the bottom of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of the original brown finish, distinct Damascus patterns, most of the original gold, and traces of the niter blue background on the barrels; mostly bright locks, aged patina on the furniture, distinct etching and engraving, and generally only minor age and storage related wear. The short ramrod is stuck. The stock is fine and has crisp carving, mild fading of the ebonized finish in the grasping areas, some slight edge wear, a faint crack at the nose of the left lock and a small chip at the tail, and generally only minor wear. Mechanically excellent.
