Description:

Anton Burckhardt of Weimar was active in the mid-19th century. The pistols have twelve-groove rifling, dovetailed German silver blade front sights, "ANTON BURCKHARDT IN WEIMAR" inlaid in silver on top of the barrels, fixed notch rear sights on the upper tangs, scroll engraving, "ANTON/BURCKHARDT/IN/WEIMAR" and rotating hammer stall safeties on the locks, adjustable single set triggers, primarily silver furniture with some coordinating engraving patterns, nicely figured stocks with pin (pique inlaid) and floral carving accented checkering on the wrists, and "coronet/G" inscribed on the wrist escutcheons. The modern hardwood case holds the pistols, a nipple wrench, a screwdriver, ornate "B.A.P." powder flask, ball mold, mallet, and some tow. The consignor indicated these pistols were owned by a prince from Saxony and used for hunting. Given the coronet and the "G" on the silver escutcheons, they may have been owned by Georg, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg, who reigned in 1848–1853 or Prince George, later King George, of Saxony. The later was king in 1902-1904 and was previously a military officer and fought in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 and Franco-German War of 1870 during which he commanded the XII Corps. These pistols would have served nicely as an officer's sidearms.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 60% of the original bright blue finish on the barrel, 75% original case colors, some aged patina on the furniture, distinct markings and engraving, and minor overall wear. The stock is fine and as a small splice on the left side by the wedge, a tiny crack just below, crisp checkering, attractive figure, and minor marks and scratches. The set trigger needs adjustment; otherwise, it is mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good and have mild storage wear.
