Description:

This sword dates to roughly 1750-1775, likely from one of the states that now make up Germany. The porcelain grip has highly detailed scenes of mounted officers (along with a man prostrate on the dirt in submission) and an artillery battery. The tapered 28 5/8 inch blade has a 7 1/4 inch lower section with etched and gilt designs on a niter blue background. The hilt is case silver with chased floral designs and gilded backgrounds. The scabbard has coordinating silver mounts and dark green velvet binding. The sword case has a coat of arms with a double headed eagle with elevated wings (no crown/coronet), a central escutcheon with a running hound at center and three smaller shields emblazoned on it.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 75% plus original niter blue and gold finish remaining on the blade which is otherwise mostly bright and has some minor patination, nicks, and spotting. The hilt has traces of the gilt backgrounds, distinct designs, and aged patina. The grip is especially fine and has distinct painted scenes, minor handling wear, and some play. The scabbard is fine and has some minor contact wear and separation on the binding and attractive aged patina on the silver fittings. The case is also fine and has moderate overall age and storage related wear. Overall, this is a stunning small sword.
