Description:

This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1886 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 40/82, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 30 inches, Trigger: Plain", and "Sling and Swivel". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 8, 1888. The 30-inch, full octagon barrel has a standard, sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn, sporting style rear sight with knurled edges and screw-adjustable center-piece. The rifle has a full length magazine. Special order factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang immediately behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the rear tang screws. The barrel and full length magazine have a blue finish. The bolt and loading gate are bright blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a semi-gloss varnish finish. Model 1886 rifles with special order barrels longer than the standard 26-inch barrel are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains 98% plus of the bright original blue and vivid color casehardened finish overall. Small amounts of dried grease are present on the sides of the barrel above the forearm. The barrel legend and caliber designation are crisp. The bolt has nearly all of the bright blue finish with dried grease along the edges of the extractor. The blue on the loading gate has faded slightly but 95% remains. Small amounts of dried grease remain in protected areas. The case colors on the crescent buttplate have faded with age discoloration and light pitting at the buttplate screw, heel and toe. The walnut stock and forearm both remain in excellent condition; nearly all of the semi-gloss finish remains, and wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with very scarce, special order 30-inch octagon barrel and very desirable casehardened receiver.
