Description:

These rifles were manufactured starting around 1875 and into the 1880s. Less than 1,000 Peabody-Martini sporting rifles were manufactured in total by the Providence Tool Co. including examples in at least six different basic configurations. "70 GRAIN" and "40 CAL" are marked on the muzzle. It has a windage adjustable globe front sight with a spirit level, "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE, R.I. U.S.A." on the top of the barrel, "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS" on the trigger guard with a lined border, "What Cheer" and "Mid-Range" engraved in banners flanking a scene of a stag, doe, and fawn on the right side of the action, (resembling "The Monarch of the Glen") a finely detailed wooded hunting scene on the opposite side showing a hunter taking an elk while another flees, elaborate interlaced scrolls on the balance with finely textured backgrounds, a Vernier peep sight on the upper tang numbered to the gun, "W.J. WOLCOTT" marked on the cocking indicator, "John C. Ormsby" inscribed on the top of the action at the breech, multi-point checkering with rope borders on the forearm and buttstock and smooth forearm tip and rifle buttplate. The buttstock has some attractive figure. Ormsby's identity is unclear, but a John C. Ormsby is listed in Boston in the period. N.J. Wolcott's name has been found on the cocking indicator of multiple Providence Tool Co. rifles and has been supposed to be their engraver. A man named Newlan J. Wolcott, identified as an employee of Springfield Armory, also jointly patented a improvement for pantographs in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1872 and later moved to Lowell, Massachusetts.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 98% plus of the restored blue visible on the barrel, 70% original case colors, distinct markings and engraving, crisp checkering, attractive figure on the very fine buttstock, minor scratches and marks, and general minor wear. Mechanically fine.
