Description:

Manufactured from 1883 to 1891. This example has a receiver with a fine factory engraving consisting of scrollwork, bordering and circular panel game scenes. A buck is engraved on the left side, and a doe is engraved on the right side. The receiver has the two-line Marlin address/Ballard's patent on the left side. The Rigby barrel flats are scroll engraved and the upper rib is marked "BALLARD" in a banner along with an arrow. It has windgauge adjustable front and mid range Vernier tang sights, nicely figured and checkered forearm and pistol grip stock, cheekpiece, horn pistol grip inlay and horn forend tip. Matching serial numbers are on the receiver, barrel, forearm and Swiss nickel plated buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel retains 70% thinning original blue remains with a extensive speckling of gray on the balance. 98% replated chrome plating remains on the buttplate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and around the trigger, otherwise the remaining surfaces have a mixed gray-brown patina. The engraving is crisp. The wood is very good with a few stress cracks in the pistol grip, minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent.
