Description:

The consignor attributed this musket as used by the Americans during the American Revolution, and muskets of this pattern are known to have been used during the war. See pages 108-109 of "Weapons of the American Revolution" by Moore and page 84 of "The History of Weapons of the American Revolution" by Neumann. It has a small bayonet stud on the bottom of the barrel, rounded brass blade front sight, "JB: 1764" (faint) marked on the left side of the barrel near the muzzle, dished barrel tang for a rear sight, "N" on the thumb plate, "A14 No 55" on the buttplate (possibly rack numbers), "I L" carved into the left side of the butt, arrow head style finials on the trigger guards and ramrod entry ferrule, and raised tear drop flats.

Rating Definition:

Good overall with mix of dark brown patina and a coat of oil/varnish along the lock and barrel as well as moderate oxidation, resurfaced frizzen, natural aged patina on the brass furniture, loose fit of the barrel to the front of the forend, coat of varnish and some minor repairs along the stock as well as moderate wear appropriate to a musket used in the Revolution such as a few cracks and dents, and some gaps around the inlets. The half-cock notch is not secure, but it otherwise functions mechanically.
