Description:

This "1848" dated (both tang and lock) U.S. Model 1842 was manufactured at the Springfield Armory and has the standard markings and features. This model is significant as the last U.S. martial smoothbore musket. Many of these muskets were later rifled and had rear sights added, but this one remains in the original configuration. Though technically outdated by the onset of the American Civil War, these remained in use during the war and performed well with buck-and-ball loads at shorter ranges.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with light patina forming on the otherwise bright metal surfaces, distinct markings, some slight oxidation/pitting, a few slight chips in the stock, general scratches and dings on the metal and wood, and mild overall wear. Mechanically excellent.
