Description:

This unique kit is contained in a locking presentation case (much resembles Colt Paterson cases of the same period; possibly same manufacturer) with red velvet lined interior containing two layers of gear. The top area contains an attractive mule ear (side hammer) pillock rifle marked "W. GARDNER/PATENT/GENEVA" on the scroll engraved lock plate and "W. GARDNER/GENEVA" on the top barrel flat at the breech just ahead of three gold bands. In addition to the lock plate, the upper tang and hammer are engraved. The barrel has bead front and notch rear sights. The lightweight stock has German silver furniture including star shaped inlays on the butt of the finely figured stock which also has an unmarked gold initial plaque on the upper wrist. Included firearm accessories include a ball mold marked "W. GARDNER" and "GENEVA" as well as two turnscrews and a barrel tang wrench marked the same, a "DIXON & SON" marked powder flask with two compartments containing balls on the rear face, three rods for loading and cleaning, some loose balls, and more. Inside one of the lower compartments are five small circular paper targets with bullet holes and period handwriting. The bottom of three of them is marked "S. Gardner/Shot this". Two are marked "rest" on top, one is entirely unmarked, one is marked "off hand" on top, and one has other unknown writing. The top lower compartment holds a four piece fishing rod. The other compartments contain a variety of tackle and other gear including a small fire starting kit comprised of a container with an engraved llama and leaves with a small flint and material inside, balls of dry material (possibly hair or another raw material) and folded cloth, two hand knapped arrow/spear heads along with another softer stone that is wrapped in paper, a compass (damaged), round paper container with hooks marked "Genuine double silver Plated/Manufactured at Nuremberg/No 6/50 Pairs/by C.F. Bauerreis & Muller/Hooks & Eyes", a folded piece of paper marked "CHILLINGWORTH's/Best Kirby/No. 3", various lines, hooks, lures, feathers, a red white cloth, and more.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 50% of the thinned brown finish with some pitting and marks. The lock and upper tang have an attractive gray patina. The star inlays have a dark patina while the remaining German silver components remain bright with some small pits and a textured impression on the top of the buttplate. The stock is fine as period repaired forend with some minor scratches and dings with reglued cracks in front of and below the lock plate extending around to from the top edge on the right around to the top edge on the left. The front wedge is absent. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with some chips, scratches, and small cracks. The original interior lining is very good with some wear. The accessories overall are very good with some items slightly damaged or worn. This set would be a great addition to any American longarm collection as it encapsulates early American Homesteading.
