Description:

Carl Pirko of Vienna, Austria, was active around 1831-1867. The barrel is octagon right at the muzzle, has a blade front sight, a notch rear sight with folding leaf, "C Pirko in Wien" inlaid in gold in ornate script behind the rear sight, a "2" and meander border in gold inlay at the breech, and attractive textured Damascus material. The lock has "C. PIRKO/IN WIEN" in a banner, and it and the other fittings have dense leafy scroll and floral engraving. The inside of the lock is marked "MULACZ" (Anton Mulacz of Vienna, see "Der Neue Stockel p. 843). It has an interesting trigger and trigger guard arrangement. The set trigger slides within the rear portion of the bow, and the guard has a wood extension. The varnished walnut stock has multi-point checkering on the wrist, a finely carved wood patch box lid with a horn button in the bloom for a release, and a broad cheekpiece. These short rifles were excellent for stalking prey.

Rating Definition:

Fine with gray and brown patina, distinct engraving and Damascus patterns, crisp markings, bright gold accents, minor oxidation, and general minor wear. The ramrod pipe is detached but present. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, a few minor dents and scratches, crisp carving, and glossy varnish. Mechanically excellent.
