Description:

This incredibly rare, high condition antique black powder Colt Single Action Army revolver is Colt manufactured with a smoothbore barrel chambered in .44-40 WCF. Colt manufactured a very limited quantity of smoothbore SAAs that were chambered only in .44-40 WCF and .45 LC. They are true rarities and highly desirable. In fact, this is the only example of its type that we have cataloged, and its condition alone makes it a stand out piece. The accompanying factory letter confirms the 7 1/2 inch smoothbore barrel in .44-40 caliber and blue finish, and the type of stocks are not listed. It was shipped on August 27, 1894, to Hartley & Graham of New York City. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top and "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. The left side of the frame has the two-line patent dates marking followed by a circled Rampant Colt. The right side of the trigger guard is stamped with the number "8". Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, and both grip panels. Smoothbore revolvers and lever action rifles/carbines were often employed by trick shooters and Wild West shows. The latter had mostly ended by the 1920s, but exhibition shooters remained popular, including marksmen and sharpshooting ladies sponsored by firearms companies like Colt and Winchester. One can only imagine the history of this historic revolver!

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine, retaining 70% plus original blue finish with blue mixed with smooth dark brown patina on the grip straps, and rotation drag lines visible on the cylinder. 85% plus original case colors remain on the frame. The grips are very fine with scattered minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your opportunity to acquire the only documented Smoothbore Colt Frontier Six Shooter SAA revolver that we have ever offered at auction!
