Description:

Manufactured in 1883 and subsequently refurbished by Colt to artillery model. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address. The left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three-patent dates followed by "U.S." The underside of the barrel is marked "P" and "R.A.C." there is an "H" in the hammer cut out, a "G" below the serial number on the trigger guard and a "P" on the cylinder. The matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder is also numbered with the full serial number "91891" in which Colt added the "9". The bottom of the barrel is marked "136577" under the ejector rod housing. The loading gate has the assembly number "53". "Bulls-eye" style ejector rod head, blade front and frame notch rear sights, blue finish with casehardened frame and fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip with "R.A.C." stamped on the bottom of the right side. This revolver is identified in Kopec and Fenn's "Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers…a Continuing Study" on page 111 by serial number as issued to the famed 1st U.S.V. Cavalry (Rough Riders), specifically to Michael Hogan and William W. O'Dell, both of Co. I, during the Spanish-American War. Includes a John Kopec gold-seal letter of authentication, awarded to “a revolver which is found to be authentic in every respect, regardless of the percent of original finish remaining.” This letter confirms that this revolver was issued to the two Rough Riders mentioned above and “the reason of this double recorded issue is unknown at this time.” Kopec concludes, “In looking over this very nice ‘untouched’ 1896 Artillery revolver we have noted its fine condition…We have truly enjoyed reviewing this outstanding ‘1896’ documented ‘Rough Rider’ Artillery revolver.

Rating Definition:

Fine as Colt refurbished to artillery configuration. The revolver retains 60% factory blue finish with muzzle and high edge wear, some minor pitting on the muzzle end of the barrel, some light spotting is visible on the cylinder and the balance thinning to a spotty gray patina. The frame shows 30% darkened case colors with a smooth silver/gray patina on the balance. The grip is also fine with some scattered minor dings. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
