Description:

This is a fine representative example of an early WWII G41(M) rifle that was manufactured by the Mauser factory in 1942. This was an early German armaments attempt to develop and produce a semi-automatic rifle. Two firms competed in this effort, Walther and Mauser factories. This example is of the Mauser design which ended up being a complicated, combined, conventional bolt action/semi-automatic design that used a modified "Bang" gas trap system. In the semi-automatic mode the bolt handle served as a charging handle, chambering the first round and cocking the striker. However in event of a gas system failure the operator could continue to fire the weapon like a conventional bolt action rifle using this conventional bolt action. This was a complicated rifle to produce and it lost out the Walther design, which used the standard G41/43 gas port system. It is estimated that the Mauser factory only produced approximately 12,000 in total in 1942/43 before the German Armaments ministry completely switched over the Walther G41 and later G/K43 systems. The top of the receiver is stamped "G41(M)/1942", and the standard Mauser "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof are on various parts and components. The barrel is fitted with a standard blade front sight with a sheet metal sight cover and a tangent rear sight graduated "1-12". It is fitted with a standard pistol grip walnut stock, a short mid-length walnut handguard and a cupped steel buttplate. The side and pistol grip area of the stock has the standard "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof. There are matching serial numbers present on the visible parts overall with the stock number being very faint. This example is complete with an original cross-hatched, brown leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine condition with 70% plus of the original blue finish overall showing wear on the edges and high spots with areas of heavier blue loss and touch up blue on the action cover and left side of the receiver. The front nose cap on the gas system also shows some light wrench marks overall. The stock and handguards have been lightly sanded and refinished with a very light coat of hand rubbed varnish. The left side does show some areas of heavier scratching/pressure dents were the sling buckle came in contact with the stock. Mechanically fine. A very nice looking, and very scarce example of an early Mauser G41(M) semi-automatic rifle.
